Construction Threatens Rusyn Spis Villages

from Narodna obroda. Jan. 17-1S B Feb. 27. 1995

[Jan. 17:] In a letter to Slovak Premier Vladimir Meciar, Nyzni Repasy's inhabitants on January 16 expressed alarm over the plans for the Vodohospodarska Vystavba construction firm to build the "Tichy potok" reservoir. The residents of Nyzni Repasy brought to his attention the fact that in a 1992 referendum on the issue of building the reservoir, the plan was rejected by the people.

[Jan. 18:] With the decentralization of economic power and from an ecological standpoint for the revitalization of the upper Torysa River basin has come an alternate proposal to construct water sources in the region Tichy Potok. As introduced on January 17 in the printed speech of M. Kravcik, president of the non-governmental organization "People and Water," it is only one-fourth the cost of Vodohospodarska Vystavba's proposal, and would save the village and the entire surrounding area from being inundated.

[Feb. 21:] Residents of Olsavica in okres Spisska Nova Ves are aware of the plan for the construction of the Tichy Potok reservoir, and thus have joined in the protests with neighboring endangered villages. Vysne Repasy, Nyzni Repasy, and Torysky have already protested against this construction, because it sentences their villages to extinction. This fact is included in the declaration of Ol'savica's residents from their Sunday, February 19 public gathering. Among other things, they expressed their concern over the politicizing of the cause of Tichy Potok, because it tends toward supporting the project proposed by Vodohospodarska Vystavba [i.e., the company will make a lot of money from it]. At the same time it excludes the possibility of the alternate project for construction of water sources on the upper Torysa River which would respect the concerned villages' interests.

from Narodna obroda, April 1&2 1995

On April 11 the grand opening was held for a new border crossing from Ublja (former Zemplyn county), Slovakia to Malyj Bereznyj (former Uz county), Ukraine. It will now accommodate buses, personal and commercial (up to 3.5 tons) automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians, but only for citizens of Slovakia and Ukraine, and only from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The residents of this area, on both sides of the border are predominantly of Rusyn nationality.
