Around 400 Byzantine Catholic faithful from the Ruthenian Eparchy of Passaic and the Ukrainian Archeparchy of Philadelphia, and Roman Catholic faithful from the Diocese of Allentown gathered together at St. Michael's Greek Catholic Church, Shenandoah, PA, on October 1, the Feast of the Holy Protection of the Mother of God, for a Moleben prayer service. Bishop Andrew Pataki of Passaic and Archbishop Stephen Sulyk of Philadelphia, Bishop Thomas Welsh of Allentown, were among the celebrants. Retired Eparch of Passaic, Bishop Michael Dudick (C-RS, Conyngham, PA) preached the sermon. Parish and area cantors led the congregational singing. Fr. Edward Higgins (C-RS, Mahanoy City, PA) was an area coordinator for the event. The Moleben was sponsored by the Allentown Roman Diocese in response to Pope John Paul II's call for churches to prepare for the "third millennium" of Christianity. St. Michael's Church (although it is in the Ukrainian Archeparchy) is the oldest Carpatho-Rusyn church in America, founded in 1884.
